MINISTRIES & EVENTS AT MT. CALVARY
Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church is an inner city congregation in Detroit, MI where a lot is happening. After going through several years of decline and uncertainty about the future, doors have begun to open wider for present and future ministry. Confirmations, weddings, baptisms are once again taking place. Members continue to worship God, and the Lord has blessed them. The 95th anniversary was celebrated for a year culminating in a grand celebration on October 22, 2017. The annual Easter Fair continues to grow. Summer Camp/VBS takes place every summer. Adult Choir meets on a weekly basis and provides music to enhance the worship services. Mt. Calvary operates a Food Bank to provide food and clothing for the needy. Camp Restore has begun and is receiving bookings. The new playground for the Head Start children and the community is nearly completed. The congregation is purchasing surrounding property for outreach ministry, gardens, and expansion. Exciting things are happening! Consider joining us in worship on Sundays. We invite you to join our congregation as a member. Talk to Pastor Carrier for more information! Also, please view our "Schedule Of Events" below to see what is happening at Mt. Calvary.
An annual Easter Fair is held at Mt. Calvary the Saturday before Palm Sunday for the students in the Head Start pre-school, their siblings, friends, and families. The 2018 fair saw many activities ready for participants! They could do a variety of crafts to take home, decorate (and eat!) a cupcake, get their face painted, listen to the Easter Story, play games with prizes, make a bracelet, get their picture taken for their passport of activities booklet, fill their tummies with food, enjoy a liturgical dancer, get an Easter basket (provided by Gifts for All God's Children), and have a lot of fun! The attendance is growing every year. If you are interested in helping the members of Mt. Calvary with the setup and/or the fair itself, contact the church office as help is not only appreciated, but needed. Enjoy the slideshow of the 2018 Easter Fair below!
Mt. Calvary hosts a Summer Camp, or Vacation Bible School (VBS), every year for children ages 3 to 12. Students in Mt. Calvary’s Head Start program and their siblings, children of the community, and children who would like to learn more about Jesus are invited to attend. The 2018 camp was held June 25-29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the theme was Splash Canyon. The children learned about God’s love through stories about Moses, the Israelites crossing into the Promised Land, Naaman, St. Paul and Jesus’ Baptism. After stories, music and arts and crafts, a lunch was provided for the children and the afternoon included a sports camp for all ages. Total attendance was 100 children for this year’s program. In addition to Mt. Calvary volunteers, we were blessed to have adults and youth from St. Paul in Des Peres, MO help us. Please watch for news about our 2019 camp!
Mt. Calvary hosts a Food Bank on Wednesdays twice per month from 11:15am to 12:45pm for residents in our surrounding community as well as the families of our Head Start students. In addition to the food items, we also have clothing available for children as well as adults, and other sundry items as they are donated.
