EAT IN DETROIT
While it’s not possible to eat at all of the eateries in downtown Detroit during your stay with us, nor include all of them here, we have chosen some of the top ten choices you should try. We have included a list of other places you might like to try as well. We’ve also made it easy to find by putting them in alphabetical order with their website (not all may have websites), address, and a phone number. Click on the name of the eatery to go to its website.

So, let’s get started! Here are the top ten places that we’ve chosen that you should try out on your trip to Detroit. The contact information for each can be found below in "The Food List" with the other eateries.
If you want a real taste of Detroit and Michigan, then you must try a Coney. What’s a Coney, you might ask? Essentially it is a chili dog! Mostly it consists of a hot dog with chili, onions, and mustard. However, some recipes vary and are still debated what makes a Coney complete. Coming in at #1 at a tie on our list is American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island in the Downtown District. These two places have had a rivalry for about 75 years. How about a sweet treat or some good bread to go with those deli meats you got at the grocery store? Well then, you need to try Avalon International Breads in Midtown. Or, maybe you want to get some lunch and order a sandwich while you’re there. They also have some yummy sweet treats you can carry-out. And don’t forget to wash it down with a nice cup of coffee. But if your sweet tooth goes beyond what Avalon has, then you need to try the Astoria Pastry Shop in Greektown, which specializes more in sugary delights. To compliment your cravings, we’ve decided to tie these two at #2.
Coming in at #3 is Louie’s Ham and Corned Beef in Eastern Market. Louie’s is a great place to get a sandwich for lunch or dinner for a reasonable price.
For something completely different at #4, try The Potato Place in the Wayne State District on the outskirts of Midtown. Right across from Wayne State University, it is a favorite hangout for professors, students, and surrounding business people. They use huge potatoes and load them with toppings of your choice. How about some bacon, chili, veggies, chicken, or even shrimp? The possibilities are endless. NOTE: They are a cash-only establishment!
Looking for a great pizza pie? Never fear, coming in at #5 in Detroit’s Eastern Market is Supino Pizzeria. They are known for using local and organic products. Want some deep dish pizza? Visit Pizza Papalis in Greektown. The added Bonus is that they are located right next door to the Astoria Pastry Shop.
How about a good burger?! Then try Wahlburgers at #6 in Greektown in Detroit. Started by the Wahlberg family. Yes, the former rapper turned actor, Mark, and former New Kid on the Block, Donnie, teamed up with brother Paul in 2011 to create this family venue first in Boston and then branching out around the country.
In the mood for some Chinese cuisine? Then coming up at #7 is Shangri-La in Midtown. Dine-in, carry-out, get some Dim Sum, or even sushi. Shangri-La is a tasty meal before a performance at one of Detroit’s local theatres, a sporting event, or one of our seasonal events.
Do you like barbecue? While Detroit has some nice barbecue joints around town. Our best pick at #8 is Slows Bar B-Q in Corktown. It has a gourmet spin on barbecue that has even had national attention on cable television shows and national publications too. Since it is so popular, it can get difficult to get a table.
